Programatic scanning

  • Unicorn_hunter by Unicorn_hunter

I understand that the data I am looking at was already identified by some sort of algorithm but couldn't this light transit data also be analyzed programatically? It could tag the transit and identify flier data based on simple criteria. Call me lazy but when I logged in to this site I expected to use my graphics card to run the analysis. It's way faster than I am.

NASA already uses automatic algorithms to check the data. Planet hunters is specifically used to supplement an automatic search with a human search, because we are still better at spotting some stuff, some of which are missed planets not detected programatically.

What Troy said is true of course, but if you feel inclined to have a try at doing it with a program, I think you should feel free to do so and just go ahead. I think there are several groups who try independedly an algorithmic aproach, and they were successful to some varying degrees. I like for example http://www.extrasolar.us/AKO/ .
