Two-overtone oscillation

  • caveX by caveX

How is this one accounted for? There must be a well-known phenomenon here, but I'm having trouble visualizing what it could be. The high-frequency variation with ~8-hour interval is somehow interacting with a ~5-day phenomenon which increases the amplitude of the variation. Higher highs, but also lower lows. So the second overtone makes it both brighter and dimmer per cycle. Two rotation axis? Precession + rotation?

Looks to me like it might be a Gamma Doradus variable. See similar examples here http://talk.planethunters.org/#/collections/CPHS000287. They have non-radial pulsations which together with the rotation of the star seem to cause the two modes of oscillation.

Alternatively it might be a Delta Scuti variable which are similar and have more than one mode of pulsation.
